Which one is “best” depends on the job. Chainalysis, TRM Labs and Elliptic lead on compliance and investigations, Nansen and Arkham on wallet intelligence, Dune and DefiLlama on open and queryable data, and Glassnode on network-wide market metrics.

This guide explains what these platforms do, who uses them and how the main options differ in 2026. It also covers a pricing change at Dune that took effect this month.

What Are Blockchain Analytical Tools?

Blockchain analytical tools are software platforms that collect, decode and label public blockchain data so you can investigate wallets, trace funds and measure network activity. G2’s category page describes them the same way: search, activity monitoring and visual representation of ledger data, used to investigate entities and transactions.

The ledger itself is public, but it is not readable. A Bitcoin transaction shows addresses and amounts, and nothing in it says “this wallet belongs to an exchange.” Analytics vendors close that gap by clustering addresses that share an owner and attaching labels.

Every platform in this space has three layers:

Data access. Nodes and indexers that read the chain.

Attribution. Labels and clusters that say who or what an address is.

Interface. Dashboards, graphs, alerts and APIs that put the first two layers to work.

Vendors compete mostly on the second layer. Whoever has better labels sees more.

Why Do You Need Them?

Because crypto crime is large and increasingly organized. Chainalysis’s 2026 Crypto Crime Report found that illicit addresses received at least $154 billion in 2025, up 162% from 2024. That is still below 1% of attributed on-chain volume, but value received by sanctioned entities jumped 694%, and stablecoins now carry 84% of illicit volume.

Enforcement is changing to match. In the report’s words, “Authorities are no longer just targeting the wallets receiving illicit funds; they are dismantling the Infrastructure as a Service providers.” Tracing that kind of network by hand is not realistic.

Crime is only one driver. Traders want to see what large wallets are doing before the price moves, DAOs need to audit their own treasuries, and product teams need usage data. The same ledger answers all of those questions, once someone has labeled it.

Who Uses Blockchain Analytics Tools?

The audience splits by question, not by industry:

Compliance teams at exchanges and banks screen a withdrawal address before sending funds, and hold the transfer if that address received money from a sanctioned service.

Investigators and law enforcement trace stolen funds across chains. TRM Labs says its T3 Financial Crime Unit partnership helped freeze more than $250 million in stolen assets in its first year.

Traders and funds follow wallets with a record of good timing and watch token flows between exchanges and cold storage.

DeFi researchers and DAOs build dashboards on protocol revenue, treasury movements and governance activity.

Developers embed balances, histories and alerts into wallets, explorers and reporting tools.

What Types of Blockchain Analytics Platforms Exist?

Four categories cover most of the market. Knowing which one you need removes half the shortlist.

Type

Question it answers

Tools in this guide

Typical buyer

Compliance and forensics

Is this address linked to crime or sanctions?

Chainalysis, TRM Labs, Elliptic

Exchanges, banks, regulators

Wallet intelligence

Who are the big wallets and what are they doing?

Nansen, Arkham

Traders, funds, researchers

Open query and DeFi data

What is happening inside this protocol?

Dune, DefiLlama

Analysts, DAOs, developers

Market-wide on-chain metrics

Where is the network in its cycle?

Glassnode

Traders, macro analysts

Which Are the Best Blockchain Analytical Tools in 2026?

Figures below come from each vendor’s own pages or from the dated reviews linked next to them. Treat them as claims until you test a tool on your own addresses.

Chainalysis

Chainalysis is the incumbent in compliance and investigations. Reactor traces funds, KYT monitors transactions in real time and Address Screening scores wallet exposure. The company states it has clustered more than 1 billion addresses, identified 134,000+ entities and serves 1,500+ customers, including law enforcement and exchanges.

Pricing is not published, and the platform is built for institutions. A solo trader has little use for it.

TRM Labs

TRM Labs says it screens risk across 184+ blockchains as of July 2026, with full compliance functionality on 65+ chains. Its pitch is “glass box attribution”: conclusions come with sourced methodology and confidence scores, so a compliance officer can explain a decision to an examiner. The trade-off is the same as Chainalysis: quote-based pricing and an institutional focus.

Elliptic

Elliptic has operated since 2013 and lists 65+ blockchains, bridges and tokens plus more than 1 billion labeled addresses. Lens handles real-time wallet and transaction screening, and Investigator covers cross-chain tracing. Coinbase, Revolut and HSBC appear among its stated clients. Chainalysis, TRM and Elliptic overlap heavily, so the honest way to choose is a side-by-side pilot.

Nansen

Nansen is a wallet-intelligence platform. Its API page cites 500M+ labeled addresses and products such as Smart Money tracking, Token God Mode and a wallet Profiler. The API has a free plan with 100 trial credits and a Pro plan at $49 per month with 2,000 starting credits. It also accepts x402 pay-per-call payments in USDC from $0.01 per query.

CEO Alex Svanevik described the direction in a February 2026 Unchained interview: “you can do your whole on-chain investing and trading within the same product.” Analysis and execution now sit together. The prices above are for the API; the app plans are priced separately, so check them before budgeting.

Arkham Intelligence

Arkham organizes data around entities rather than raw addresses. A 2025 Coin Bureau review counted 800 million+ labels across 450,000+ entity pages, and listed a Visualizer for transaction graphs, a Tracer for fund flows and an Alerter for activity notifications. Its Intel Exchange lets users buy and sell on-chain intelligence with the ARKM token.

The same review flagged weak points: inconsistent answers from the AI-powered Oracle, centralized verification of Intel Exchange submissions and reliance on a volatile token. Those numbers date from mid-2025, so check the current ones.

Dune

Dune lets you write SQL against decoded blockchain data and publish the result as a dashboard. Spark’s comparison notes it passed 100 supported chains in February 2025.

Access changed this month. Per Crypto Briefing, legacy free accounts (created before July 21, 2026) became view-only on September 10: you can browse dashboards but not run queries. Paid plans on annual billing are Analyst at $65 per month (4,000 credits) and Plus at $349 per month (25,000 credits). New accounts get a 14-day trial with 2,500 credits.

DefiLlama

DefiLlama is an open-source DeFi aggregator. Its About page lists 8,641 protocols, 557 chains and 16,579 pools, with total value locked, revenue and DEX volume on top. It answers protocol-level questions such as which chains are growing, and it costs nothing for the core data. It does not label wallets, so it will not help you trace a specific address.

Glassnode

Glassnode focuses on market-wide metrics: supply held by long-term holders, exchange flows, cost basis. As of a February 2026 review, Studio Standard is free (24-hour resolution, one alert), Advanced costs $49 per month and Professional $999 per month billed yearly, with 800+ metrics and one-minute resolution.

Its changelog shows how quickly plans shift. On September 18, 2026, 13 metrics moved to Professional-only. Protocol-specific metrics for Uniswap, Aave, Maker, Lido and Compound were retired in March, so DeFi questions now belong in Dune or DefiLlama.

Side-by-Side Comparison

Tool

Best for

Free option

Paid pricing (as published)

Stated scale

Chainalysis

Compliance, investigations

None published

Quote-based

1B+ addresses clustered

TRM Labs

Compliance, forensics

None published

Quote-based

184+ chains screened

Elliptic

Screening, tracing

None published

Quote-based

65+ chains, 1B+ labels

Nansen

Smart-money tracking

API free tier

API Pro $49/mo

500M+ labels

Arkham

Entity tracking

Not verified

Not verified

800M+ labels (2025)

Dune

Custom SQL analysis

14-day trial

$65 or $349/mo

100+ chains

DefiLlama

DeFi metrics

Free core data

Not verified

557 chains

Glassnode

On-chain market metrics

Standard tier

$49 or $999/mo

800+ metrics (Pro)

How Do You Choose the Right Tool?

Start with the question, not the brand. Then work through these steps:

Name the question. “Is this address risky?” and “what are whales buying?” need different products.

Check chain coverage. Confirm your chains are supported, and remember that UTXO chains and account-based chains expose data differently. Our guide to the UTXO vs account model explains why.

Test on your own data. Push a few hundred addresses, known-bad and known-clean, through two vendors and compare the labels.

Read the pricing model. Seats, credits and API calls scale differently, and free tiers move. Dune and Glassnode both changed access within weeks of each other.

Check explainability and export. You need to show why an address scored high, and to get data out.

Plan the data layer. If you build your own analytics, decide where the raw data comes from.

Where Does the Underlying Blockchain Data Come From?

Every platform above starts with nodes that read the chain. If you build custom analytics instead of buying a dashboard, you need that layer yourself: RPC for current state, indexed queries for balances and history, and archive access for past state.

NOWNodes offers those pieces as infrastructure. Its Blockbook API returns indexed balances, transactions and address history on 30+ networks without a custom indexer, and its archive nodes cover historical state on 45+ networks. Heavy, continuous workloads can move to dedicated nodes. For event-level data on Ethereum, see how to fetch smart contract events.

None of this replaces a labeling vendor. Node access supplies the raw data, and attribution is a separate product.

What Are the Limits of Blockchain Analytics?

Labels are estimates. Two vendors can classify the same address differently, and an address with indirect exposure to a mixer may belong to an ordinary user. Treat a risk score as a reason to look, not a verdict.

Coverage has gaps, too. Privacy coins, cross-chain bridges and new chains are the hardest to attribute, and a chain a vendor does not support returns nothing at all. Wallet tracking also shows what happened, not why, so following a “smart money” wallet is not a strategy on its own.

Conclusion

Pick blockchain analytical tools by the question you need answered. Compliance teams should pilot Chainalysis, TRM Labs and Elliptic against their own addresses. Traders and researchers will get more from Nansen, Arkham, Dune, DefiLlama or Glassnode, often in combination, since each covers what the others skip.

Whatever you choose, re-check pricing before you commit, because this category reshuffles plans often. And if you build your own analytics, get the data layer right first.

FAQ

Is blockchain analytics the same as blockchain forensics?

Not exactly. Forensics is one branch of blockchain analytics, focused on tracing illicit funds and supporting investigations. Analytics also covers market research, DeFi metrics and product usage data.

Do I need coding skills to use these tools?

Only for some. Dune requires SQL to build new queries, though you can view existing dashboards without it. Nansen, Arkham and Glassnode work through dashboards and alerts.

Can analytics tools reveal who owns a wallet?

Rarely by name. They label wallets by type, such as exchange, fund or known scam cluster, and link addresses that behave like one owner. A real-world identity usually needs a legal process or a public disclosure.

How fresh is the data?

It depends on the plan. Glassnode’s free tier updates at 24-hour resolution while Professional goes down to one minute, and compliance platforms advertise real-time monitoring. Confirm latency during your pilot.

Blockchain analytical tools turn raw on-chain data (transactions, balances, contract calls) into something a person can read: labeled wallets, fund-flow maps, risk scores and trend charts.
