You set the fee per unit of computation, and the scheduler tends to fill blocks with the transactions that bid the most per unit first.

When the network is quiet, you rarely need one. When a token launches or a busy pool fills up, the transactions with no fee attached are often the ones that silently fail. This guide covers what the fee is, how to set it in code, how much to pay, and the mistakes that quietly drain SOL.

What Is a Priority Fee?

A priority fee is an extra amount you add on top of the base cost of a Solana transaction to raise its place in the queue. It is optional, and a transaction with no priority fee still works, just with a weaker guarantee of getting in quickly.

The fee is priced against compute units, not against the transaction as a whole. That design is what makes Solana fees different from a flat network tax, so it is worth understanding before you set a number.

How Compute Units Decide the Fee

A compute unit (CU) is a measure of the computational work a transaction performs. Every instruction you run consumes some of a transaction’s compute budget, and that budget is capped.

Two numbers matter here. The compute unit limit is the ceiling of work your transaction is allowed to use. The compute unit price is how much you bid per unit, measured in micro-lamports. Multiply them and you get the priority fee.

Priority fee (lamports) = compute unit limit × compute unit price ÷ 1,000,000

One lamport is the smallest denomination of SOL, and 1,000,000 micro-lamports equal one lamport. The division above converts the micro-lamport bid back into lamports.

What You Actually Pay

Every Solana transaction carries a base fee before any priority fee is added. That base fee is a minimum of 5,000 lamports per signature (Solana docs), which is 0.000005 SOL for a single-signer transaction. Most transactions have one signer, so this is the floor.

The priority fee stacks on top. Take a swap that uses 200,000 compute units and a price of 10,000 micro-lamports per unit. The priority fee is 200,000 × 10,000 ÷ 1,000,000 = 2,000 lamports. Add the 5,000-lamport base fee and the whole transaction costs about 7,000 lamports, or 0.000007 SOL.

One rule saves money here. You are charged on the compute unit limit you request, not the units your transaction actually burns. Set the limit too high and you pay for headroom you never use.

Why Do You Need a Priority Fee to Land a Transaction?

Solana does not run one shared fee market. It prices contention per account, so a transaction competes only against other transactions touching the same accounts it writes to. These are called local fee markets.

That design has a direct effect on you. A fee that was plenty for a calm part of the network can be far too low for a single hot pool during a launch. The congestion is local, so your bid has to match the accounts you are actually touching, not a global average.

Blocks also have hard limits. A transaction can request up to 1.4 million compute units, and a full block holds 48 million, so there is only so much room per slot. When demand for an account exceeds that room, the scheduler ranks competing transactions by price per compute unit and fills the block from the top. A transaction with no priority fee sits at the back of that ordering.

Who Pays Priority Fees, and When

Priority fees matter most to anyone whose transaction loses value by arriving late. A few groups feel this every day:

Arbitrage and sniper bots, which submit transactions in windows measured in milliseconds and need to beat other bots to the same accounts.

DeFi traders, where a delayed swap can execute at a worse price or exceed slippage and revert.

NFT mint participants, who are all trying to write to the same mint accounts at the same second.

Application developers, who set a fee on behalf of users so a wallet action confirms during busy periods instead of hanging.

For most ordinary transfers in a calm period, the base fee alone lands the transaction, and a priority fee adds cost for no real gain. The skill is knowing when the extra bid is doing work.

How to Add a Priority Fee to a Transaction

You add a priority fee by including two instructions from the Compute Budget Program at the start of your transaction. Order them before the instruction that does the real work.

Set the compute unit limit with
ComputeBudgetProgram.setComputeUnitLimit
. This caps the compute your transaction may use.

Set the compute unit price with
ComputeBudgetProgram.setComputeUnitPrice
. This is your bid, in micro-lamports per unit.

In the Solana Web3.js library the pattern looks like this:

js

import { Transaction, ComputeBudgetProgram } from "@solana/web3.js";

// Cap the compute your transaction may use
const limitIx = ComputeBudgetProgram.setComputeUnitLimit({ units: 200000 });

// Bid a price per compute unit, in micro-lamports
const priceIx = ComputeBudgetProgram.setComputeUnitPrice({ microLamports: 10000 });

const tx = new Transaction().add(limitIx, priceIx /*, your instruction(s) */);

If you skip these instructions, Solana falls back to a default limit of 200,000 compute units per instruction and a compute unit price of zero, which means no priority fee. The transaction still sends; it just carries no bid.

How Much Should You Pay?

There is no fixed number that works across slots, because the right fee changes with whatever is happening on the accounts you touch. The reliable method is to price from recent activity rather than guess.

Start with the compute unit limit. Simulate the transaction first to see how many units it really uses, then set the limit to that figure plus a small margin. A tight limit avoids overpaying and also makes your bid look stronger per unit to the scheduler.

Then price the bid. The getRecentPrioritizationFees RPC method returns recent priority fees used to land transactions, and when you pass it the accounts your transaction uses, it reflects contention on those specific accounts rather than the network as a whole. Pick a percentile that matches your urgency: a median value for a routine send, a higher one when failure is expensive. Recalculate per transaction, and cap the maximum you are willing to pay so a spike cannot drain a wallet.

Priority Fees vs Jito Tips

Priority fees are not the only way to influence ordering on Solana. Jito tips are a separate, out-of-protocol path, and the two are easy to confuse.

Priority fee

Jito tip

What it is

In-protocol fee priced per compute unit

Out-of-protocol payment to a block-building relay

How you set it

Compute Budget Program instructions

A transfer to a Jito tip account, usually inside a bundle

Who receives it

Validators (100% since SIMD-0096)

The validator running Jito’s software

How ordering works

Scheduler ranks by price per compute unit

Bundles compete in an auction and can enforce order

Best for

Normal sends that need to jump the queue

Bots needing atomic bundles or front-of-block execution

The relationship between the two drove a real protocol change, covered next.

Where Priority Fees Go Now

For most of Solana’s history, priority fees were split: half went to the validator, half was burned. That changed with proposal SIMD-0096. On May 27, 2024, the Solana community approved SIMD-0096 to send 100% of priority fees to validators and drop the burn, and the change activated on the network in early 2025.

The burn had an awkward side effect. Because Jito tips were never burned, users had to overpay on the protocol’s own fee to compete with them. Solana Labs co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko called the burn a bug, noting that users had to pay roughly double the priority fee to outbid Jito tips.

After the switch, the pressure to overbid eased. According to data from Solana Compass, the median priority fee fell about 40% from the period just before the feature activated. A later proposal, SIMD-0123, aims to let validators share priority fees with stakers inside the protocol, which the current design does not do.

Common Mistakes That Waste Fees

Most wasted SOL comes from a handful of avoidable errors:

Setting the compute unit limit far above what the transaction uses. You pay on the limit you request, so an inflated ceiling costs extra and weakens your per-unit bid.

Setting the limit too low. If the transaction needs more compute than you allowed, it hits a “compute budget exceeded” error, the state changes revert, and the base fee is not refunded.

Reusing a stale blockhash. A transaction references a recent blockhash that expires after about 150 blocks, roughly a minute. Send with a fresh one or even a well-priced transaction gets dropped.

Paying a flat fee during local congestion. A global average can sit far below what a single busy pool demands, so price against the accounts you are writing to.

What You Need to Estimate and Send Fees Reliably

Every step above runs against a connection to the chain. You simulate the transaction through it, call
getRecentPrioritizationFees
through it, and broadcast the signed transaction over it. If you don’t run your own Solana node, a provider supplies that endpoint.

NOWNodes offers Solana access you can use to read recent fees, simulate before sending, and submit transactions. That matters most during congestion, when a stable endpoint is worth more than a shared public one. Free public endpoints are commonly rate-limited, so heavy senders usually move to a paid plan with more throughput.

One honest caveat: the endpoint affects how reliably you can reach the network, not whether your transaction gets included. Inclusion is decided by your fee and the validator’s scheduler. No provider controls Solana’s fees or guarantees a transaction lands.

Conclusion

Priority fees give you a lever over transaction ordering on Solana, and using them well is mostly about restraint. Cap the compute your transaction can use, bid a price drawn from recent activity on the accounts you touch, and raise the price before you raise the limit.

Skip the fee when the network is calm, because the base fee alone handles routine sends. Add one when timing has a cost, and size it to the local market rather than a flat guess. Done right, a priority fee is the difference between a transaction that lands and one that quietly expires.

FAQ

Does Solana have gas fees?

Not in the way Ethereum uses the term. People often call Solana’s costs “gas fees,” but the network splits the cost into a fixed base fee per signature and an optional priority fee priced per compute unit. There is no single fluctuating gas price for the whole chain.

Do I always need to pay a priority fee?

No. During normal conditions, a transaction lands on the base fee alone, and adding a priority fee just raises the cost. Use one when you are competing for a congested account, such as a token launch or a crowded pool, or when a late transaction would lose value.

Are Solana priority fees refunded if a transaction fails?

Usually not. If a transaction runs and fails, for example by exceeding its compute unit limit, the state reverts but the fee is still charged, because the network already did the work of processing it. This is why setting an accurate compute limit matters.

Can a priority fee guarantee my transaction gets included?

No. A high fee improves your position in the scheduler, but a transaction can still miss if its blockhash expired, if higher bidders are contending for the same account, or if the network drops the packet. The fee raises your odds; it does not remove the risk.

Solana priority fees are an optional payment you attach to a transaction so validators schedule it ahead of others when blockspace is contested.
