KYC covers the first, through identity checks. AML covers the second, through wallet screening, transaction monitoring and reporting. No single product does both equally well, so most teams pair an on-chain risk engine with an identity provider.

The short version for 2026: BitOK suits small and mid-size teams that want per-check pricing and a fast API. Chainalysis, TRM Labs and Elliptic are the AML software vendors for exchanges and institutions that need deep chain coverage. Sumsub handles identity, Notabene handles Travel Rule messaging, and ComplyAdvantage fits bank-style screening. The rest of this guide explains what these AML solutions do, why regulators care, and how to choose.

What Does Crypto Compliance Tooling Actually Do?

Anti-money laundering software checks whether customers and funds are tied to crime, sanctions or fraud, then records what you did about it. In crypto that check runs against a public ledger. Money laundering detection software traces an address through clusters of labeled wallets instead of reading a bank statement.

Five jobs make up a typical AML software stack:

Layer

Question it answers

What you get

Identity verification (KYC/KYB)

Who is this person or company?

Verified profile and risk tier

Wallet screening

Is this address linked to sanctions, scams, mixers or stolen funds?

Risk score before you accept a deposit

Transaction monitoring (KYT)

What is this money doing right now?

Real-time alerts

Travel Rule messaging

Who sent this transfer, and who receives it?

Sender and recipient data exchanged between VASPs

Case management

What did we decide, and why?

Audit trail and reports

Chainalysis draws the same line in its Know Your Transaction glossary: KYC asks who the customer is, KYT asks what the money is doing. Good AML KYC tools cover both, because a verified customer can still receive stolen funds.

Why Do Crypto Businesses Need It?

The amounts are large and the laundering is getting more organized. The UN Office on Drugs and Crime estimates that 2–5% of global GDP, or $800 billion to $2 trillion, is laundered every year. Chainalysis’s 2026 Crypto Crime Report counted $154 billion received by illicit addresses in 2025, up 162% year on year. That is still under 1% of attributed on-chain volume, but the mix matters: value received by sanctioned entities rose 694%, and stablecoins carried 84% of illicit volume.

Hacks add pressure. The February 2025 Bybit exploit took $1.5 billion, and North Korean groups stole about $2 billion over the year. Stolen coins have to be cashed out somewhere, which makes every exchange and payment processor a possible exit ramp. Closing that gap is the job of AML compliance software.

Regulators are blunt about it. In the FATF’s July 2026 virtual assets update, president Giles Thomson said: “Effective implementation of the FATF Standards can no longer be delayed.”

Who Uses These Tools?

Exchanges, custodians, payment processors, OTC desks and wallets with fiat on-ramps are the core buyers of AML software. Banks and fintechs use the same AML tools once customers start moving money to or from crypto platforms. Investigators use them too: TRM Labs says its platform serves 600+ government agencies and financial institutions across 75 countries.

Picture a concrete case. A customer deposits 50,000 USDT on TRON. AML screening software checks the sending address before the credit posts. If that address sits a hop or two from a sanctioned entity, the deposit is held and a compliance officer decides whether to release, freeze or report it.

What Do Regulators Require in 2026 and 2027?

The Travel Rule is the biggest driver. According to the FATF update, 83% of surveyed jurisdictions now have Travel Rule legislation, up from 73% in 2025, and 11 more are working on it. Enforcement lags, though: Notabene’s analysis of the same report found that 55 of the 91 jurisdictions with rules in force have issued no finding, directive or enforcement action. Thin enforcement today doesn’t stop banks and partners from asking for the controls anyway.

Thresholds differ by region. The FATF standard is USD/EUR 1,000, while the EU applies no minimum threshold to crypto transfers. From 10 July 2027, the EU’s Anti-Money Laundering Regulation (Article 79) also bars crypto-asset service providers from keeping anonymous accounts or handling anonymity-enhancing coins. If your product touches those assets, read our breakdown of privacy coins before you plan a listing.

How Does the Screening and Monitoring Workflow Run?

Most AML systems follow the same sequence, whichever AML platforms a team buys:

Verify identity at onboarding. Collect documents, run a liveness check and screen the person against sanctions and PEP lists. Companies go through KYB instead.

Screen the wallet. Check the deposit or withdrawal address for exposure before funds move.

Score the risk. The engine assigns a level based on direct and indirect links to labeled entities.

Monitor continuously. AML transaction monitoring software fires alerts when a rule trips, such as sudden volume or rapid hops between addresses.

Investigate and report. An analyst reviews the alert in a case, records the decision and files a report where the law requires one.

Exchange Travel Rule data. For transfers between VASPs above the threshold, send and receive originator and beneficiary details.

The order is the point. Screening before the credit is cheap, while unwinding a credited deposit is not.

Which Vendors Should You Compare in 2026?

This AML software comparison covers seven AML solution providers. Figures come from each company’s own site, so treat them as claims until you’ve tested the product on your own addresses. BitOK leads because it targets small and mid-size crypto teams; the enterprise platforms follow, then the specialist layers.

Vendor

Main job

Stated coverage

Typical buyer

BitOK

Wallet checks, monitoring, fund tracing

15 blockchains listed in its blog

Startups, payment services, smaller exchanges

Chainalysis KYT

Real-time monitoring, investigations

400+ networks, 50M+ tokens

Large exchanges, banks

TRM Labs

Monitoring, screening, forensics

600+ agencies and institutions, 75 countries

Institutions, government

Elliptic

Screening, investigations

65+ blockchains, bridges and tokens

Exchanges, banks

Sumsub

KYC/KYB, KYT, Travel Rule

Global document coverage

Platforms onboarding retail users

Notabene

Travel Rule

2,000+ VASPs, 100+ jurisdictions

VASPs, payment firms

ComplyAdvantage

Customer screening, transaction monitoring

Banks, insurers, fintechs

Banks

BitOK

BitOK is a crypto-native AML risk management platform and one of the AML software solutions built for small teams. Its KYT Office product offers real-time transaction monitoring, a customizable risk model, multi-user access and an API, and it flags sanctions, darknet services, scams and suspicious client behavior. A separate Graph tool traces funds, and a Telegram bot handles quick wallet checks. Its blog lists 15 supported networks, including TRON, Ethereum, Bitcoin, Polygon, TON and Avalanche.

Pricing is per check. The pricing page starts KYT Office at $1,000 for 2,000 checks ($0.50 each) and drops to $0.10 per check at 100,000+ checks, although the homepage advertises checks “from $0.05,” so confirm the rate on a quote. The trade-offs: coverage is narrower than the enterprise platforms, and its Travel Rule module is listed as upcoming, so pair it with a Travel Rule provider if you need one.

Chainalysis KYT

Chainalysis KYT monitors 400+ networks and 50M+ tokens, raises alerts within seconds and lets teams tune thresholds and typologies. One vendor from onboarding to monitoring is convenient. If you need deep on-chain tracing, test its KYT against a dedicated analytics vendor.

Notabene

Notabene runs a Travel Rule network of 2,000+ VASPs across 100+ jurisdictions and helps identify self-hosted wallets. It does one job, and doesn’t score wallets, so it complements the vendors above instead of replacing them.

ComplyAdvantage

ComplyAdvantage offers customer and company screening, ongoing monitoring, transaction monitoring and payment screening, and lists Santander and Allianz among its customers. It claims its AI can automate 95% of reviews. Its strength is traditional financial-crime coverage rather than on-chain tracing.

Do Banks Use the Same Tools as Crypto Exchanges?

Partly. Banks lead with customer and payment screening: sanctions, PEPs, adverse media, then AML case management software that produces an audit trail for supervisors. On-chain analytics is an add-on for customers who move money to and from crypto platforms.

That is why AML solutions for banks look different from an exchange’s stack, and why anti money laundering software for banks is usually judged on explainability and audit trails first. The AML tools used by banks are covered in ComplyAdvantage’s own guide to bank software, which sorts vendors by data quality, explainable AI, unified fraud and AML workflows, and regulatory agility. Banks with crypto exposure often bolt on a specialist such as Chainalysis or Elliptic; Chainalysis names BNY Mellon and Elliptic names HSBC as clients.

How Do You Pick the Right Vendor?

Start with what you list and who you serve, then work through six checks:

Chain coverage. If you accept USDT on TRON, TRON must be supported. An unsupported chain is a blind spot.

Pricing model. Per-check pricing suits low or uneven volume. Annual enterprise contracts suit steady, high volume.

Explainability. You should be able to show a regulator why an address scored high.

Workflow. Look for alerts, case management, audit trail and API access. Not every AML screening software product includes all four.

Travel Rule and KYC fit. Decide whether they come bundled or from separate vendors.

False positives. Every extra alert costs analyst time.

Run a pilot before signing. Take a few hundred past addresses, including known-bad and known-clean ones, and push them through two vendors. Compare the scores and the alert volume.

Where Does Blockchain Data Access Fit?

Vendors supply labels and risk scores, but your platform still has to see the chain. It must detect incoming deposits, read balances and confirm transactions before it sends anything to a screening API. Teams that build part of this layer in-house need reliable blockchain API access.

NOWNodes provides that layer across 120+ networks. Its Blockbook API offers indexed balances, transactions and address history on 30+ networks, which suits deposit detection and address lookups. Dedicated nodes suit high-volume or private workloads.

NOWNodes doesn’t score risk or screen wallets, so it works alongside the vendors above. For the custody side of the picture, see how custodial and non-custodial wallets differ on KYC.

What Can Go Wrong?

Scores are not verdicts. A wallet with indirect exposure to a mixer may belong to an innocent user, and blocking it blindly creates false positives. Set rules for what needs review and what needs a block.

Coverage gaps matter too. Labels are proprietary, so two vendors can rate the same address differently, and a chain outside a vendor’s coverage returns nothing at all. This is another reason to pilot.

Finally, a clean score doesn’t prove funds are legal. It says only that no known link exists in that vendor’s data today. Keep records of every decision, since the audit trail is what examiners ask for.

Conclusion

Choose the best AML KYC software by fit, not by brand. A small team accepting a handful of assets can start with a per-check provider like BitOK and add a Travel Rule service as volume grows. An exchange with hundreds of listed tokens will likely need Chainalysis, TRM Labs or Elliptic, and a bank will start from screening and case management.

Whatever AML compliance solutions you pick, test them on your own data and keep the audit trail. Rules are tightening: the Travel Rule is now law in most surveyed jurisdictions, and the EU’s anonymous-account ban lands in July 2027.

FAQ

Is KYC enough without wallet screening?

No. KYC confirms who a customer is, but it says nothing about where their crypto came from. A verified user can still deposit funds linked to a hack or a sanctioned entity.

Can a small startup afford compliance tooling?

Usually, yes. Per-check pricing keeps costs tied to volume; BitOK’s published KYT Office tiers, for example, start at $1,000 for 2,000 checks. Enterprise platforms are priced by contract and are typically a larger commitment.

Do I need a Travel Rule provider if I only accept deposits?

Often, yes. Receiving VASP-to-VASP transfers can trigger obligations to collect and verify sender information.
