Ethereum on the Verge of Pectra: Update Already in the Testnet

Ethereum is approaching one of its most significant updates—Pectra. Developers have successfully activated it on the Sepolia testnet, meaning the main launch is just around the corner. We have already updated and are ready for the upcoming changes. Let’s break down the key changes in the eth erigon sepolia 2.61.1 update and what to expect from the much-anticipated Pectra!

What Is Pectra and Why Is It Important?

Pectra is the third major Ethereum update since the implementation of the Proof-of-Stake algorithm. It combines two major Ethereum network upgrades—Prague (for the Execution Layer clients) and Electra (for the Consensus Layer). The update includes 11 Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIP), two of which are particularly important:

  • Account Abstraction (EIP-3074) – This change will allow wallets to temporarily function as smart contracts. It will significantly simplify interactions with decentralized applications. Users will gain more flexibility in managing their transactions, while developers will have new opportunities to enhance the user experience.
  • Increase in Staking Limit (EIP-7251) – The maximum deposit for validators is increasing from 32 ETH to 2048 ETH. This will enable large stakers and node operators to manage their funds more efficiently, reduce network load, and make the staking process more sustainable.

Sepolia 2.61.1 Update: What’s Changed?

Ahead of the Pectra hard fork, an important Sepolia 2.61.1 update is being implemented. The v2.61.1 version introduces the following innovations:

New Feature Support

  • Added support for eth_blobBaseFee, eth_baseFee, and the updated eth_feeHistory compatible with EIP-4844.
  • Implemented a new method engine_getClientVersionV1, improving interactions between Ethereum clients.

Bug Fixes

  • Fixed intrinsic gas calculation, reducing the likelihood of transaction errors.
  • Adjusted eth_getBlockByNumber for the Polygon network, ensuring correct miner block accounting.

What’s Next?

With the release of Pectra, Ethereum will become even more scalable, user-friendly, and efficient. This update could also serve as a bullish catalyst for Ethereum!
